On December 3rd, from 2 – 4 pm, Gage McKinney will discuss the unique tradition of glee clubs and carol singing, which the Cornish miners brought with them when they immigrated to America. The Grass Valley Cornish Carol Choir will be joining Gage to sing a selection of songs.
Gage McKinney descends from early settlers and Cornish miners in California. His books include The 1930s: No Depression Here, an account of California’s Gold Country; MacBoyle’s Gold, the biography of gold miner, engineer and philanthropist Errol MacBoyle; California’s Troubadour: A Life and Selected Poems of Clarence Urmy; Crosses in a Gold Field, A 150-year History of Emmanuel Episcopal
Church and Grass Valley; and When Miners Sang, the story of Cornish folk music and carols. For his writing Gage received the Phelan Award and was made a Cornish bard. He’s a past president of the California Cornish Cousins. He was previously an executive with Ingersoll Rand and Lockheed Martin Corporation and now lives in Grass Valley.
